GOP Climate Denier To Celebrate Park Service Centennial Amid Melting Glaciers

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), a self-proclaimed climate change “skeptic,” is scheduled to visit Montana’s Glacier National Park on Thursday in celebration of the National Park Service’s 100th birthday.

Daines, who would deny that humans are responsible for drastic, well-documented environmental changes at the park, will be surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks and rapidly melting glaciers.

Daines’ office announced his trip in an email advisory Wednesday, saying the senator would join other Instagram users at a park “InstaMeet,” an event that brings park visitors together to “make friends, take photos, and exchange ideas.”

The idea that man-made climate change is fueling the retreat of the park’s namesake glaciers, however, is likely not something Daines will be entertaining.

In a 2014 interview with Montana Public Radio, Daines said “the jury is still out” about whether fossil fuels contribute to climate change. He said he’s seen “very good data” suggesting there are other contributing factors, including solar cycles.

“Climate change,” Daines told the radio station, “is very real. The climate is always changing, it’s either warming or it’s cooling. The climate is dynamic, it’s not static … I think the question certainly is what part does man-made climate change factor [into] this equation, certainly with CO2 and greenhouse gases. And I think there’s just still reasonable debate here, whether or not it is a significant part of this or not.”

That kind of comment makes most climate scientists cringe. Studies suggest that 97 percent or more of scientists who are actively publishing research believe climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities.

A visit to Glacier National Park is a front-row seat to the severity of the problem. In 1850, there were roughly 150 glaciers in the area. Today, there are just 25, many “mere remnants of what they once were,” according to the National Park Service.

“If the current rate of warming persists, scientists predict the glaciers in Glacier National Park will be completely gone by the year 2030, if not earlier,” the park service writes on its website.

In a Facebook Live interview with The Huffington Post this week, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” said that during a recent trip to Glacier, park rangers told him they expect all the glaciers to be gone in five or six years.

“So it will be Sandy Hillside National Park,” Nye joked.

For anyone who runs into Daines on Thursday, ask if he’s concerned about the park losing the glaciers that have carved its landscape and have drawn more than 100 million visitors.

Daines’ office did not respond to The Huffington Post’s request for comment Wednesday.

In April, Daines was among more than two dozen Republican senators who asked Secretary of State John Kerry to cut funding for the United States’ involvement in United Nations effort to address climate change.

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

Afternoon Slump Got You Down? There’s A Nap For That

There’s a reason you, like clockwork, feel sluggish when 3 p.m. rolls around each day. Scientists call it the circadian dip, and it happens because our bodies regulate periods of wakefulness and sleepiness, the latter of which peaks for most adults during the nighttime hours of 2 and 4 a.m., and the daytime hours of 1 and 3 p.m.

The good news? There’s an easy solution. We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to get to the bottom of the #PowerOfSleep. Check out the video below to learn more.

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support — your Sleep Number® setting. The World in My Kitchen

The World in My Kitchen

“We are on our way to Le Havre. The train is going so fast that the landscape is all but a blur. From time to time, I can see a farm in the mist surrounded by a sea of green fields. I am excited but also scared. It is 1955, and we are on our way to New York.” So begins the marvelous journey of Colette Rossant, just married to an American architect and about to leave France for a new life in the heart of New York City. At first, Colette finds Americans’ manners to be as mystifying as their cuisine, but before long, she discovers the myriad charms of her adopted country. Between taking on an astoundingly diverse series of jobs, raising four children, and renovating a Soho town house, Colette develops her own flair for food — and for superb food writing. In this spirited and deliciously entertaining memoir, Colette shares the unforgettable stories of her forty tumultuous years at the heart of American and international cuisine. The children’s cooking school she starts for her daughter’s friends turns into a starring role on a PBS television series. As New York magazine’s “Underground Gourmet,” she hails the city’s staggering array of outstanding ethnic cuisine. Either with her husband and children, or on her own, she travels to Africa, China, Japan, and South America, exploring cuisine and culture around the globe. She rides camels through the Australian outback, barters lipstick for fresh vegetables in Tanzania, and is almost arrested as a spy by the Chinese secret police — just because she is trying to eat like a local. Charming, indomitable, endlessly curious and adventurous, Colette Rossant inspires us to savor every meal — and every day. With a wonderful array of mouth-watering recipes, The World in My Kitchen is an irresistible celebration of family, food, and life.

Derailment And How To Manage It

2016-08-19-1471635426-4431424-IMG_4095.JPG

In the world of psychology, derailment describes thought processes that veer off track, go awry, stray from the thought. Like a car that has skidded off the road, the ideas fail to arrive at their destination. In the realm of politics, derailment refers to a tactic by those in power that deflects attention away from complaints about abuse or wrongdoing by introducing an alternative topic. This blog explores derailment as a diversion from a life goal, and how it’s possible to get back on course.

In his journal, the writer John Cheever alluded to a loss of continuity at a critical point in his life. “It seems that in my coming of age I missed a year–perhaps a day or an hour….The consecutiveness of growth has been damaged. But how can I go back and find this moment that was lost?” Although the impact of Cheever’s derailment extends beyond the scope of this blog, his expression highlights the common problem.

In the newly released movie, Florence Foster Jenkins, the heroine, Florence, contracted syphilis from her first husband. As a result, she didn’t bear children and was deprived of a fulfilling family life. That derailment led her to devote her life to singing and supporting the musical world with the fortune she inherited from her father.

We assume an extreme diversion is equivalent to a disaster, but the event may actually represent a chance to recover a “lost” direction or passion. The classic story of The Little Prince (recently made into a popular movie) can be viewed as a metaphorical derailment in the realm of literature. As a young boy, the protagonist of the story drew a boa constrictor swallowing an elephant. But the adults insisted that the drawing resembled a hat. Unimpressed with the child’s skill, the grown-ups redirected him from artistic to practical studies– geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. “That is why I abandoned, at the age of six, a magnificent career as an artist,” the protagonist says, justifying his profession as a pilot. Years later, his plane crashed in the middle of the desert, and he was visited by a little prince who commanded him to draw. The little prince may well represent the pilot’s imagination or alter ego that harbored his desire to become an artist.

In real life, a patient of mine, Ms. W., experienced a serious depression, a kind of psychological crash. During her hospitalization, she recalled that in her youth, she had aspired to become a singer. In the hospital, she had the opportunity to connect her depression with the long-forgotten ambition. Upon her recovery, she studied voice and became a successful musician.

Conclusion: Although we can’t undo the past, we can recognize a derailment and take action to get back on track.

To Fight Zika Beyond Florida We Need Better Sex Education

In light of the recent news that Zika virus could stay in semen for more than six months ― twice as long as scientists previously though the virus could be detected ― it’s time for the United States to ramp up its focus on the major mechanism for Zika virus transmission after mosquitos: sex.

“For the public health community, Zika represents an unprecedented emergency,” Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association in August.

“Never before, to our knowledge, has a mosquito-borne virus been associated with human birth defects or been capable of sexual transmission,” Frieden wrote. “The effects of brain damage due to microcephaly and consequences of other Zika-related birth defects are likely devastating, lifelong, and costly.”

As Zika virus spreads, with at least 55 countries and territories reporting local transmissions, according to the CDC, and the United States reporting two areas of active transmission in Florida, health officials like Frieden have called for increased safe-sex messaging, even for people outside active Zika zones.

New York City is ramping up its public health messaging on sexually transmitted infections to include Zika virus in coming weeks, The New York Times reports. The campaign will feature posters, fliers, radio and television ads, in addition to deploying community health workers to communicate the risks of sexually transmitted Zika in person.

Florida’s sex ed blunder

But not everyone is making public health a priority. In Florida’s Broward County, which is adjacent to Miami-Dade County, where active Zika transmissions are occurring, abstinence-only rhetoric is trumping public safety ― at least for now.

According to Miami news station WSVN 7News, Broward County removed two AIDS Healthcare Foundation billboards that featured unrolled condoms reminding people that safe sex “prevents Zika transmissions.”

The Fort Lauderdale mayor’s office and tourism board pressured the company to take down the signs, Michael Kahane, a spokesman for the foundation, told the station. “They felt, I guess, that they could impact tourism,” Kahane said. “I find it completely disgusting.”

Still, neither the mayor’s office nor the tourism board is taking credit for the sign’s removal, so it’s unclear who is behind the billboard takedown.

We still don’t know enough to write strong health policies

Using condoms is key to curbing sexually transmitted infection, including Zika virus, but health experts cautioned against overstating Zika’s sexual transmission risk compared to the larger risk of transmission via mosquitos.

Travel-related Zika virus is a major concern. The CDC currently recommends that pregnant women avoid traveling to areas with active Zika transmissions and use condoms or abstain from sex if their partner has traveled to a Zika outbreak area in the last six months.

Dr. Federico Laham, the medical director of infectious disease at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando stressed that it’s also important for doctors to ask pregnant patients about their travel histories, regardless of whether or not the Aedes aegypti mosquito is present in their areas of practice.

One major challenge for health officials trying to curb sexually transmitted Zika in their respective cities is that it’s difficult to craft definitive public health and safe sex recommendations, because no one knows for sure how long Zika virus can stay active ― or remain capable of transmitting infection ― in men’s semen.

That information is “very important if you are trying to craft a prevention method to your community,” Laham told The Huffington Post. “Any couple expecting a child will live with a lot of anxiety. It’s important for health officials to deliver a clear message.”

Zika isn’t the only STI that can hurt unborn babies

For Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of medicine in the infectious disease and global health divisions at the University of California Los Angeles, focusing on sexually transmitted Zika and the risk it poses to pregnant women misses the point.

“Zika is important, but we need a much broader holistic approach to address infections in pregnant women,” Klausner said.

He cited congenital syphilis ― when a pregnant woman infected with the disease passes it to her child ― as a more common STI, with equally grave consequences. Indeed, congenital syphilis can cause severe illness, miscarriage, stillbirth and early infant death, as well as blindness, nervous system damage and deformity if left untreated.

“When things are common and they occur regularly people forget about them,” Klausner said. “We need to remind people of the day-to-day risks.”

There were 12 cases of congenital syphilis per 100,000 live births in 2014, an increase from 8 per 100,000 live births in 2012, according to the CDC.

Klausner believes defunded health departments and communicable disease programs in the wake of the 2008 recession is making it even harder to address issues like congenital syphilis and Zika virus.

He’s also frustrated by Congress, which failed to pass a Zika bill before leaving for summer vacation this year.

“You can’t trade the health of one population because of ideological views,” he said. “When Congress does come back, it’s going to be important for local constituents to demand a response.”

The Square Persimmon & Other Stories

The Square Persimmon & Other Stories

The Square Persimmon and Other Stories is an introduction to Takashi Atodaone of Japan’s most popular and versatile writers of fiction. Takashi Atocia is a master storyteller. Like the bar madam in “The Glow of Lipstick,” he is capable of weaving a tale that captures the reader’s attention from beginning to end. His plots deal with ordinary people, yet the emotional impact of each story is unusually strong. His down-to-earth characters inhabit a world that may at first appear familiar, but Atoda can so manipulate a scene that suddenly the reader is wondering whether it is reality or illusion that he is observing. Many stories feature bizarre endings. In these eleven stories, Atoda examines universal themes-first love, lost love, change, fate-through unmistakably Japanese eyes. The dreamlike quality of some stories invites the reader to draw his own conclusions in the denouement. Yet, in each one, Atoda brings to bear his precise style and his own unique vision, by turns mysterious, romantic, darkly humorous, and even bizarre.

Baltimore’s Police Department Is Being Represented By A Neo-Nazi Lawyer Over Wrongful Arrest Of Black Man

A neo-Nazi is representing the Baltimore Police Department in a lawsuit claiming officers fabricated evidence in order to send an black man to jail for a murder he didn’t commit, according to an investigation by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Glen Keith Allen, who works in the Baltimore City Law Department, is a longtime supporter of the neo-Nazi National Alliance, the report says. He is now defending the city in a 2015 lawsuit filed by Sabein Burgess, who was imprisoned for 19 years before being released and having the charges dismissed in 2014.

The SPLC has financial records dating back to 2002 that appear to prove Allen is deeply involved with neo-Nazi groups.

“Allen’s history with organized racism and anti-Semitism is deep. Records obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) show he was a dues-paying member of the National Alliance for years,” the report says. “Allen was also a subscriber to the NA’s racist publications, purchased entrance to a Holocaust denial conference the group held and bought a Holocaust denial DVD the group sold.”

Allen, according to the SPLC, has contributed to the American Eagle Party National Committee and is possibly the vice chairman/parliamentarian or attorney for the NA.

A damning report from the Justice Department released last week shows that Baltimore police officers routinely abused residents’ civil rights, performed unconstitutional searches, failed to hold cops accountable for misconduct and, in some cases, were told by supervisors to target black residents and “lock up all the black hoodies.”

Baltimore has been in the national spotlight since April 2015, when 25-year-old Freddie Gray suffered a fatal spinal cord injury in police custody ― a death widely viewed as one caused by police misconduct.

“Baltimore’s Litigation and Claims Practice Group is arguably one of the most aggressive and successful defenders of police misconduct in the country,” the SPLC’s report says, before pointing to extreme lengths the office will take to avoid paying settlements in these cases.

Baltimore paid out around $ 12 million in police misconduct cases between 2010 and 2014, according to a 2015 Wall Street Journal analysis. Civil rights violations, alleged shootings, beatings and wrongful imprisonment brought on the most expensive payouts.

Meditation For A Blessed Election

I started writing guided meditations more than ten years ago. As a health and wellness coach I write them for myself to prepare for important trips and events. I write them for friends who are having medical procedures. I help clients write them. And a while back, when this toxic election season was really beginning to affect my peace of mind, I decided to write one specifically about the election. I, like many other Americans of both parties, was having “Trump anxiety.”

At the same time it’s not just politics on my mind. I have been moved and saddened by the many police shootings and terrorist attacks during this difficult year, and kept wondering what I could do to make a difference. How could I use my gifts to help?

I was hesitant to share this publicly because anything related to politics brings down a rain of toxicity and hatred upon the writer and I didn’t want to have that directed at me. After sharing it in my writers’ group and seeing its impact on several listeners, I decided I would share it with my intention for the best possible outcome.

Feel free to take it and make it your own, changing the wording as needed to suit your worldview. I hold on to the hope that most Americans want to feel good about our democratic process and our country. I love the idea of people across the country reading versions of this every day, amplifying its effect in the world. I hold on to the belief that it will make a positive impact on our country in the coming months.

Meditation for a Blessed Election
Guide me in conversation today with others who disagree with me.

Let me come to those conversations with an open, loving heart.

Guide me as to what actions I should take today to help move our beautiful country forward, and give me clear direction on how to do so.

Help America live up to her inclusive ideals.

Pour out your healing on the racism that still divides our country.

Let hatred be a thing of the past.

Help retrain our police officers where needed, while keeping them safe on the job.

Help heal those communities torn apart by gun violence with real, tangible progress and real solutions.

Help those of us with any kind of privilege use it for healing and justice and the betterment of all.

Bless the candidates near and far. Bless those running for office who are motivated by service and the higher good.

Bless their intentions. Bless their staff members and volunteers.

Bring out their best selves as they campaign.

Surround them with protection to keep them safe.

I say a special prayer for Hillary today. May she be her best and highest self. May she be able to speak clearly today and communicate her best intentions.

May she uphold and live up to all the hopes and dreams of women everywhere. May she be a shining beacon of light around the world.

Protect her from the hatred that is directed at her, surrounding her with a circle of light and powerful protection that is physically represented by the Secret Service. Keep them safe in their jobs and diligent while on duty.

I lift up all the candidates, surrounding them with love, support, and my highest intention for the good of the United States.

Let those who have the country’s highest good in mind, of either party, be blessed with an abundant flow of money, volunteers, and media support.

Let their supporters come forward in the hundreds of millions now and on November 8th. May we have the highest voter turnout in history.

May love trump hate.

May those people who will work together for the common good of our country and their constituents be elected in landslides.

May those people who have never spoken out before but feel moved, speak out.

May those who have never voted before register and vote on November 8th.

May those who have never done community organizing or volunteering sign up and get started.

May those who haven’t voted recently but want to make the country better and more unified get out to vote.

Remove all obstacles for people to get out and vote.

I look forward to breathing an enormous sigh of relief on November 9th, knowing that the country will be in Hillary’s steady, skilled, experienced hands, and that the legislative branch will be filled with people from both parties dedicated to getting to work together for their constituents, to compromise thoughtfully to move us forward.

Bless us all this day and keep us safe.

What Are Your Options if Medicaid Goes Broke

Americans are living longer than ever.

With that longer life span comes increasing reliance on long-term healthcare services.

And costs associated with in-home care services, nursing homes, and other residential facilities are on the rise.

The primary payer for long-term care is Medicaid, the joint federal and state program designed to help Americans with limited incomes pay medical costs.

“Government programs such as Medicaid and the like may not necessarily be around going forward to provide assistance,” said Money Crashers finance expert David Bakke.

Bakke told Healthline that Medicaid is projected to run out of money in the year 2030, or perhaps as early as 2026.

“Medicaid will certainly have a challenge when it comes to handling the strain of long-term care for seniors and retirees,” he said. “You could make the argument that already the needs of the elderly aren’t being met in a satisfactory fashion under the current system. In fact, 37 percent of long-term care costs are currently being met with out-of-pocket funds.”

According to Bakke, some states are putting the onus on providers to keep care costs under control.

The realities of long-term care

Melissa Benjamin is a home care worker in Colorado and a leader in the Home Care Fight for $ 15. She’s in the trenches of home care services every day.

In addition to our aging population, she believes other factors are fueling the Medicaid crisis.

In an interview with Healthline, Benjamin said there’s already a shortage of home care workers, and she expects it to get worse. As more experienced workers age out of the workforce or look for employment elsewhere, fewer workers are willing to take up the slack.

“It’s no longer a viable career,” said Benjamin. “Low pay and lack of benefits keep people from choosing this type of work.”

The worker shortage is creating a care gap that forces difficult choices. When family members shoulder more of the care burden, it’s often at the expense of their own employment. Placing a loved one in a facility isn’t always the best option for them or for the family budget.

Although Medicaid covers both types of care, in-home care is often less expensive by several thousand dollars a month.

“It’s one reason I fight for home care. I believe by making home healthcare a viable career, we can keep more people in their homes and save the states money in the long run,” said Benjamin.

For some people, nursing home care is a must. But Benjamin believes many others can be happier and healthier being cared for in their own homes.

“In Colorado, about 10,000 people become seniors every day,” she said. “That’s a strain, and it’s true all around.”

Then there’s the gender gap.

At 37 years old, Benjamin is already concerned about her own healthcare needs as she ages.

“A higher percentage of home care workers are women. We make less, have fewer benefits, and pay less into Social Security. Often, women who cared for their husbands are left alone and needing care themselves. Plus, we live longer, so that time is more challenging.”

In Benjamin’s experience, long-term care insurance policies can save the day. The key is to sign up when you’re younger and rates are at their best.

Unfortunately, when rates rise, many aren’t able to keep paying the premiums. That can result in having to sell off assets to apply for Medicaid.

“I’ve held the hands of people in facilities as they cry. They want to go home, but their home has been sold to pay for facility care,” she said.

Planning for long-term care

Seniors, soon-to-be seniors, and caregivers can’t start planning soon enough. It’s a complicated issue and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

As alternatives to insurance and government programs, Bakke recommends a health savings account when applicable, a home equity line of credit, and in some cases, a long-term care annuity.

“In some instances,” said Bakke, “you might be better off foregoing long-term care insurance and paying for whatever costs are left over out of pocket, because of the high cost of paying for insurance coverage in that area.”

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, most seniors can’t afford the out-of-pocket costs of long-term care.

Jennifer FitzPatrick, author of “Cruising through Caregiving: Reducing the Stress of Caring for Your Loved One,” would like to see more public education about long-term care and Medicaid.

“There really needs to be a paradigm shift so older adults and their families are not counting on Medicaid because of misunderstanding,” said FitzPatrick, who has worked as a gerontologist and geriatric social worker for more than 25 years.

“I’d love to see Medicaid encourage more people to consider long-term care insurance, which covers much more than Medicaid can,” FitzPatrick told Healthline. “I wish I saw more being done so caregivers and older adults weren’t in crisis.”

FitzPatrick recommends consulting with a certified elder law attorney.

Benjamin and Fitzpatrick agree that consumers have a lot more options when using private funds than they do when using Medicaid.

“It’s important also for families and older adults to know that often when they do use a Medicaid benefit for a nursing home, for example, they aren’t getting as much choice,” said FitzPatrick. “Sometimes patients and caregivers are dissatisfied with the nursing home options available for a direct Medicaid admission.”

Americans are optimistic. We tend to underestimate the risk of needing long-term care.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that half of seniors over age 65 will have a health problem and need assistance for two years or less.

One in seven will need assistance for more than five years. Those turning 65 now can expect $ 138,000 in future long-term care costs. In many cases, costs will be much higher.

Having a long-term care policy is a good idea, if you can afford it. Most can’t.
As of 2014, fewer than 8 percent of Americans have private long-term care insurance.
Medicaid was never meant to cover long-term care for so many.

“I can’t count the number of caregivers who have incorrectly assumed that Medicare or Medicaid would pay for assisted living or indefinite home care services,” said FitzPatrick.

Deadly Louisiana Floods Overwhelm Emergency Response Efforts

Deadly flooding in Louisiana is straining state emergency response efforts as officials and residents contend with floodwaters reaching areas that have historically been safe from natural disaster.

The deluge that started with heavy rainfall Friday has left at least six people dead. First responders have rescued more than 20,000 people, officials said.

“I was calling 911, but I couldn’t get them on the phone,” Baker resident Margaret Teague told NOLA.com on Sunday. Teague, whose home in an eastern suburb of Baton Rouge was partially destroyed, lost another home to Hurricane Katrina 11 years ago.

AT&T service was down for an unknown number of residents in the metro Baton Rouge region after a switching tower that directs cellular phone traffic flooded, further complicating rescue and evacuation efforts.

Teague told NOLA.com her family was among residents bounced from one makeshift shelter to the next before finding one where they could remain.

Roughly 120 people from a Baton Rouge Salvation Army shelter had to evacuate after the headquarters flooded with more than six feet of water, The Associated Press reported. Other families had to sleep on the floors of shelters that had run out of beds, state Department of Children and Family Services head Marketa Walters told Reuters.

Gov. John Bel Edwards (D), who on Friday declared a state of emergency, was forced to evacuate the governor’s mansion in Baton Rouge with his family.

Mike Steele, communications director for the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, told weather.com on Sunday that rescue efforts were “all hands on deck.”

Steele said motorists were stranded on Interstate 12, and parts of the highway remained closed. At least 2,700 homes from Baton Rouge to the eastern rural Tangipahoa Parish have flooded, he added.

President Barack Obama on Sunday issued a disaster declaration that makes affected parishes eligible for federal relief.

According to the Advocate

The federal declaration that Louisiana suffered a major disaster frees the federal government to pay about 75 percent of the state’s expenditures in dealing with the emergency. Higher matches, up to 90 percent federal dollars to 10 percent of state spending, are available depending on how expensive the disaster eventually becomes.

Just five months earlier, Louisiana was slammed by springtime flooding.

The cost of the latest damage hasn’t been estimated. State Trooper Bryan Lee told The Huffington Post Monday that financial issues aren’t a priority for now.

“One of the challenges we’re facing is the interstate system being closed, and getting resources and rescuing people that need to be rescued,” Lee said. “As far as financial issues, that’s something we’re not concerned with right now.”

Lee estimated that nearly 4,000 residents were being housed at metro Baton Rouge-area shelters, including 3,000 people at the Celtic Studios ― a movie studio.

Jay Dardenne, Louisiana’s commissioner of administration, told the Advocate the state is spending whatever necessary responding to the floods for search, rescue, shelter and evacuation.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, which handles disaster- assistance, has been under pressure from Congress to trim how much the federal government gives to states for disaster response.

Louisiana has frequent natural disasters from floods and hurricanes, but is poorer than states like California, which faces wildfires. That financial situation complicates Louisiana’s ability to recover from disasters and invest in prevention efforts.

Jesse Pines, a professor of health policy and management at George Washington University, wrote in a 2014 report that funding for disaster planning and recovery tends to be “lumpy.”

“A disaster happens and there’s a big flood of resources to take care of the disaster,” Pines said. “And over time as different disasters hit and there are different funding priorities, there’s less money being invested in prevention.”

CORRECTION: An earlier version reported the wrong location of the governor’s mansion and and incorrect party affiliation for the governor.

It is only fear that allows you to keep making excuses for why you might not look, every day, into what is going right and what’s gone wrong in your life. Until you choose to be brave in your decisions and fearless with your self, you will have a hard time facing your need to be truthful and vigilant… which is what a quality life requires of you.

Getting Over Your Self does not come in a formula, so if you are here to avoid doing any work, you’re in the wrong isle… may I suggest romance novels. How dare I talk to you like that? Get Over Your Self and recognize when you are blaming others for what is happening inside of you.

Like everything else, working on yourself is only an opportunity. You can either let it pass you by, or work on clarifying your decision making processes to bring you closer to discovering the best in you… which is living with your truth specifically not following anyone else’s truth because it just doesn’t work to live someone else’s life, no matter how hard you pretend or how comfortable you try to make it. Last Warning: Look at the end result of your decisions before you make them. Embrace the quality of your own life’s decisions. It will work better for you than the alternative.

And that is why it is important that you discover what it means, and why there is value in, Getting Over Your Self. It is your choice to be Honest (truthful), use Foresight (have consideration), and be Brave (show integrity) so you can discover how to create the kind of life you and everyone around you can live with… which is why this blog is in single page chapters… to cut down on the rhetoric, which means a better (faster) experience for you. However, some of the chapters you will like and others you will not. Just so you know, this is not a workbook for you to follow in hopes of finding your “stuff” or fixing your “shit.” It is just a wake up call with tools listed in alphabetical order… the rest is up to you… and it really is up to you to find out what is keeping you from discovering the truth/your truth.

Aetna Drops Obamacare In Most States

Aetna Inc, the No. 3 U.S. health insurer, on Monday said that due to persistent financial losses on Obamacare plans, it will sell individual insurance on the government-run online marketplaces in only four states next year, down from the current 15 states.

Aetna’s decision follows similar moves from UnitedHealth Group Inc. and Humana Inc., which have cited similar concerns about financial losses on these exchanges created under President Barack Obama’s national healthcare reform law.

Aetna is also trying to buy Humana and is currently fighting a U.S. government lawsuit aimed at blocking the $ 34 billion deal.

Aetna, which earlier this year said it was too soon to give up on the exchanges despite its challenges, this month signaled it was reconsidering. On Aug. 2, the company said it would not expand in 2017 and would review all its individual business.

Many insurers last year had said they expected to profit on the exchanges, but now say more exchange rules must be changed for it to be sustainable. Only about 11 million people have signed up through the exchanges, about half as many as expected.

Larry Levitt, healthcare economist at the Kaiser Family Foundation, said that if enrollment stagnates, small technical fixes likely will not be enough to bring big insurers back. “More healthy people need to be encouraged to sign up,” Levitt said by email.

Aetna said that the current risk adjustment system, in which the government balances out the costs of sicker than typical populations through payments to insurers, is not adequate.

Aetna said that it had a second-quarter pretax loss of $ 200 million on the individual business and has lost $ 430 million since the plans first went on sale in 2014.

Kevin Counihan, Chief Executive of the U.S. government-run individual marketplace, said that the risks of the customer pool is improving.

“It’s no surprise that companies are adapting at different rates to a market where they compete for business on cost and quality rather than by denying coverage to people with preexisting conditions,” Counihan said in a statement.

Aetna on Monday said it would continue to sell plans on the exchanges in Delaware, Iowa, Nebraska and Virginia in 2017. The plans, which are eligible for income-based government subsidies, will be sold in 242 counties, down from 778 counties this year. States it is exiting include Florida and Ohio.

It will continue to sell individual plans that meet the law’s requirements – such as not denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions – outside of the exchanges where it does now, the company said.

No Prison For Colorado Student Who Raped ‘Helpless’ Freshman

Austin Wilkerson told friends of a fellow University of Colorado-Boulder student who drank too much at a party that he’d take care of her. Instead, he raped her as she drifted out of consciousness and lied about what he had done.

Wilkerson, 22, convicted of sexual assault of a helpless victim and unlawful sexual contact, faced a possible prison sentence of four years to life for the March 2014 attack on the freshman woman. But a judge in Boulder, Colorado, on Wednesday sentenced him to two years on work release and 20 years’ probation.

“I’ve struggled, to be quite frank, with the idea of, ‘Do I put him in prison?’” said Judge Patrick Butler, according to the Daily Camera newspaper. “I don’t know that there is any great result for anybody. Mr. Wilkerson deserves to be punished, but I think we all need to find out whether he truly can or cannot be rehabilitated.”

The lenient punishment, reminiscent of the six-month sentence given to Stanford University athlete Brock Turner in June for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, adds to the perception that the criminal justice system too often fails to consider the trauma and lifelong effects experienced by rape victims, said Brie Franklin, executive director of the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

“We are disappointed to see, yet again, that the impact on the perpetrator, who chose to commit a crime against another person, is being considered over the impact on the victim, who did not have a choice in the matter,” Franklin told The Huffington Post.

Turner’s light sentence helped propel national outrage against the judge who imposed the punishment and its message of making excuses for serious criminal assault.

Supporters of Wilkerson, as in the California case of Turner, appealed for leniency. Wilkerson’s friends and family said the crime was a “traumatic incident” for him. They asked the judge to consider Wilkerson’s future, and said he “will go far in this world if not defined by this one incident.”

Wilkerson’s victim drank too much celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, and Wilkerson told her friends he’d take care of her. Instead, he “isolated and raped the half-conscious victim,” prosecutors said in court documents.

Wilkerson admitted to investigators he’d made advances to the victim that night, “but that she rebuffed him each time, and that he felt ‘pissed off’ and called her a ‘fucking bitch,’” according to court documents.

Wilkerson told the jury that the woman wasn’t inebriated and that their sexual activity was consensual. His defense argued that the victim filed a rape claim to cover up for a drop in her grades.

Following his conviction in May, probation officers recommended a sentence with no prison time, arguing Wilkerson was remorseful. Prosecutors fiercely disagreed, writing in a pre-sentencing memo that Wilkerson’s changing story was evidence he hadn’t seriously accepted his guilt.

District Attorney Stanley Garrett pointed to harm to the victim in a memo to the court, arguing “it is objectively offensive to consider as ‘punishment enough’ the fact that the defendant will have to pursue a career as a biochemist instead of as a medical doctor.”

“If more than a quarter of people in this community were killed by a drunk driver, or assaulted or menaced during an invasion of their home, the community would call for a stronger message than a sentence of probation with no punitive sanction to effectuate respect for the law, the deterrence of crime, and the protection of the public,” Garnett wrote. “Sexual assault should be no different. Murderers go to prison. Armed robbers go to prison. Rapists go to prison. This is what justice requires.”

Why Do Teens Cut and What Can Parents Do To Help?

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Michael R. Hollander, PhD

2016-08-11-1470883706-9834237-HollanderHeadshot198Oct1115.jpgApproximately 14 to 18 percent of high school students and between 12 to 35 percent of college students in the United States engage in some form of self-injurious behavior at least once. The age of onset often occurs in early adolescence, between the ages of 11 and 14.

While self-harm is of serious concern for parents, families, and teachers, it’s important to know that when the right approach and treatment is provided in a timely manner, this behavior is highly treatable. But kids who self-harm need treatment right away. Giving in to pleas for more time and delaying treatment can lead to further, more serious injury. While we often hear about the number of teens who engage in this behavior, the majority who are treated appropriately can go on to lead happy, healthy lives.

Is an act of self-harm a form of suicide? Can it lead to suicide?

This type of self-harm is known as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which by definition is the deliberate, intentional damage to one’s body tissue without the intention of dying. There is no intention of suicide, however, there can be a high correlation with suicide if self-injurious behavior goes untreated.

Why do adolescents cut or engage in other self-harm activities?

It’s most often a way of trying to manage emotions. For example, when teens cut themselves, they will usually experience a sense of calmness. It also appears that the vast majority of teens who self-injure are those who have a high degree of self-criticalness and self-loathing. Self-injury helps them to contain their emotions. Or conversely, if they feel numb and empty, they use self-injury to feel something.

A small percentage of teens use self-injury for avoidance or to create a distraction. An even smaller percentage use it to get attention. And for a very small group of kids, they use it to punish themselves because they feel they don’t deserve to live, breathe, or take up space. They may cut themselves in the context of an extreme emotional situation.

This is a group of highly-emotional and sensitive adolescents who frequently feel things more intensely than their peers, but that doesn’t necessarily distinguish who would engage in self-injury. This type of behavior is about not having the skill set to modulate emotions in conjunction with a high degree of self-criticalness. There are other factors that can come into play as well, such as co-occurring mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance use, and/or a history of trauma.

What are the most effective ways to respond to an incident of self-harm behavior?

When consulting with parents or speaking to community groups, these are the main points I make:

  • It’s important to not overreact. Try to assume a matter of fact approach, without judgment. Try to stay open minded and validate the teen’s emotions. Validation is key to keeping an open dialogue.
  • Get an assessment of whether or not the behavior is self-injurious in order to manage one’s feelings or if the intention is to commit suicide.
  • Assuming the behavior is non-suicidal, I suggest that parents start with their primary care doctor to help find a therapist who is highly trained and has a track record of treating adolescents with self-injurious behavior.
  • Elements of successful treatment for self-injury include individual therapy with a skills component such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is a type of cognitive therapy that helps one increase emotional and cognitive regulation by improving coping skills. It’s also important to include family skills training and family therapy.

Hollander, PhD, is the director of training and a senior consultant for 3East, McLean Hospital’s DBT treatment program for adolescents, and an assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry, part-time, at Harvard Medical School. A nationally recognized expert on the causation and treatment of self-injury, he has been treating adolescents and their families for over 40 years and lectures throughout the United States on this subject. His book, Helping Teens Who Cut: Understanding and Ending Self-Injury, was published in 2008. Additional information on self-harm can be found in the webinar “Assessing and Treating Self-Injury”, led by Dr. Hollander as part of McLean’s Borderline Personality Disorder Patient and Family Education Initiative.

For those who’d rather avoid the price tag–and possible wrist trauma–associated with that book, Your Mental Health is a better bet. Cognitive difficulties; developmental delays; hyperactivity and other childhood problems; posttraumatic disorders; eating, sleep, and sex-related difficulties; depressions; anxiety; and substance abuse problems are all covered. Anyone with a personal or family history of mental-health disorders will find clear-cut guidance, including information on how a psychiatric disorder is diagnosed and the various treatment options available. Dozens of support-group contacts, Web sites, and suggestions for further reading are also included. –Erica Jorgensen

Madam President Or Madman President?

There are less than 100 days until the Presidential election, and voters will have to choose between Hillary Clinton, a former first lady, two-term US Senator, and Secretary of State or Donald J. Trump, a self-glorifying “businessman,” reality television personality, and prior beauty contest promoter. All things considered, I find the title “Madam President” to be preferable over “Madman President.”

Every day there appears a new controversy involving Trump. He is a toxic mix of ignorance and arrogance never before seen in our presidential politics. He has defamed and threatened minorities, advocated war crimes, denigrated war heroes, degraded women, mocked the handicapped, and disparaged the parents of a fallen soldier who sacrificed his life to save his comrades. We are numb to the daily barrage of Trumpisms, and none of his handlers seem to be able to control him.

Trump’s “beliefs” are an ever-changing kaleidoscope, and at the end of the day all he holds sacred is himself. The terrible Trump truth is that the would-be emperor not only has no clothes– he has no character.

He is a serial name caller with the wit and charm of a school-yard bully– hurling such monikers as “Hillary ‘Rotten’ Clinton,” “Crooked Hillary,” “Crazy Bernie” [Sanders],” “Little Michael Bloomberg,” “Corrupt [Tim] Kaine,” “Pocahontas” and “Goofy” [Elizabeth Warren], “Liddle Marco” [Rubio], “Lyin’ Ted” [Cruz], “Low Energy Jeb” [Bush]. He labels other who would dare to challenge his authority “losers,” “lightweights,” and “dummies.” And women who disagree with him are often called “pigs,” “dogs,” and “bimbos.”

I have one name for him, “Delusional Donald.” He has movies playing is his head that no one else has seen, such as thousands and thousands of people cheering on 9/11 from rooftops in New Jersey– or an Iranian propaganda video showing $ 400 million cash paid by the US being unloaded from an airplane (a claim he later recanted). And yet he calls Hillary “unstable.”

What is around the corner for Trump? The debates present a dilemma for the Delusional Donald. I am sure that part of him wants to weasel out of a face-to-face showdown with her. He has already been whining that two of the three debates conflict with NFL games. Hillary is scary to him. She has an unfair advantage over Trump–she actually knows “stuff.” On the other hand, he has done poorly in organization and fund raising as compared to her– she can outspend the “very rich” Trump in campaign advertising and other venues. And she is beating him badly in the polls, which he now has ceased citing. His last chance to turn the tide may be the debates.

And if it becomes clear to him that he can’t win the election, I predict he will simply quit– blaming the media, the GOP, the Democrats, and his most recent scapegoat, the “rigged system.” He would rather save face than to suffer a humiliating defeat in November.

Trump really could end the United States of America as we know it. He has called for the rounding up and deporting of 11 million undocumented people. Do you think when his storm-troopers knock on the doors of these families, they will go peacefully into the night with his enforcers?

And his wall? What utter nonsense. The US/Mexican border spans nearly 2000 miles. How high is Trump’s fantasy fence going to be? Can anyone make a taller step ladder? He once said they may name the wall after him. I wonder who they will name the tunnels after. And how deep must it be to avoid such tunneling? How do you acquire the land and easements from adjacent property owners to get equipment and supplies in for this fool’s folly? But don’t forget the baloney that Trump will get Mexico to pay for it. I wonder if they will also pay any delinquent taxes he may owe after his alleged IRS audits.

He has advocated the banning of Muslims from entering the country. He has called for torture and worse for suspected terrorists, and said we need to “take out” their families. I am not sure how far he would extend this– are spouses, children, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins all on the hit list? And I have a hunch that anyone who challenges or opposing him will become a “suspected terrorist” and subject to the wrath of the Donald.

There are likely only two options for the CIA or the military when presented with orders to commit illegal acts or war crimes, both of which are doomsday scenarios:
1) If they obey the orders, we will become a fascist nation, or
2) If they disobey the orders, there is a real chance of a military coup.

Trump is a bully, a braggart, and a bigot– unfit for any political office and unworthy of public trust. He is a fast-talking con man better suited to run a jam-auction on a carnival midway. Every loyal American needs to reject Trump. A number of GOP leaders and donors have put their country above party affiliation and done just that, refusing to endorse or donate to him, with some admitting Hillary would be a better choice. Just today 50 patriotic Republican senior security experts, many former cabinet members and top aides, signed an unprecedented open letter to the New York Times disavowing Trump and encouraging us not to vote for him. This should give cover to others who want to jump off this unstable bandwagon.

Those who both condemn and endorse him are the epitome of hypocrisy. The Republican Party would be better off to repudiate Trump and take their loss on the Presidency while trying to salvage the down-ticket candidates. Four years from now they can try to recapture the Presidency with a credible candidate.

Having a two-party system has been of great benefit to this country, and there are intelligent people of goodwill in both parties. Sadly, Trump is not one of them. Of all the Trump bankruptcies, the most disturbing is his moral one.

As The Sunset Of Life Approaches

I am becoming ever more aware of my “perishability.” When we are children, we worry that our parents will die. As we get older, we worry that our spouse will die. But when is it that we start wondering about our own departure from this world? For me, it started when my first parent died, but it really, truly, hit me when my second parent died. I felt that I became an orphan. Alone in this world. No one there to protect me. It is a strange feeling, especially since I was well-off financially, many times more secure than my parents. And I was in my fifties already. Nonetheless, having them around, regardless of how old or financially poorer they were, gave a feeling of security, of protection. With them gone, I felt alone and realized: I am the next in line.

This feeling of being the next one to go is reinforced by several factors. When you are working, you are too busy, struggling and handling life to have time to think about death. Retired, you have ample time to think about it and to feel the pain of old age. You are reminded of it every morning when you look at all the pills you are supposed to take. You are reminded of how old you are when you need a new hip or kidney because your body has aged to the point that its parts need replacement.

If you still do not feel that the sun of your life is setting, look at old pictures. How many people in them are still alive? When you open your contact list, how many have passed away? How many of your friends have you accompanied on their last trip to the cemetery?

As you become aware that this is it, life is coming to an end, you ask yourself what life is all about. What did I do all my life? What was the purpose of me living?

If I focus on what life WAS about, I think the answer for me is clear: It was a long list of problem solving. There was no day I did not have to solve some problem. Some were small and insignificant, some I thought were critical, but, in retrospect, what I thought was critical then I now find was not worth the time and energy I put into it.

So is that’s what life is about: Solving problems in chasing the rainbow; Trying to realize some vision or mission we developed for ourselves, whether it is to be a rich man or woman, or to save the world?

As I look at what my life was, I realize I was building a sand castle. After I am gone my work will be eroded and washed away by the realities of life’s demands. People will have their interpretation of what is needed and redo my castle to reflect their needs or values.

So is this it? Life is building sand castles?

Not so. Not at all.

When was I really alive? Not when I was solving problems, no matter how successfully. All my achievements and happiness were short lived. There was always another higher mountain to climb. I spent all my life climbing mountains that existed only in my head.

That is what life was, but what SHOULD life have been, I wonder? When was I truly alive?

When I loved. Those are the minutes that really count and I am not referring to romantic love. Yes, it has its moments of happiness, and falling in love, at least in my life, was pain and mostly belongs to the problem-solving realm. The love I am referring to is doing something of value for others, something that really mattered to them, when I gave of myself unconditionally, with all my heart. When I added value to people’s lives. These experiences gave me energy, prolonged my life. Fulfilled me. I got more than what I gave.

Life is spent in the head solving problems, but should be spent in the heart giving of ourselves to solve other people problems. Prolonging other people’s lives prolonged mine.

If you want to live life to the fullest, not feel you wasted this gift, filling the heart is what life should be about; To serve others unconditionally, with all your heart, enrich others’ lives to make your own life worth living.

Just thinking,

Ichak Kalderon Adizes

This Is Exactly How You Should Adjust Your Sleep Schedule If You Know It Will Be Changing

Eager school-bound children aren’t the only ones who may need to reset their sleep schedules throughout the year. Many of us take advantage of summer’s longer daylight hours to travel and stay out late, inflating our social calendars until they’re bursting at the seams. With fall around the corner, most of us could benefit from a revised bedtime, but making that change doesn’t necessarily come easy to all.

Which raises the question: How should we go about adjusting our sack time if we know our sleep schedule will be significantly changing? Long gone are the days of our parents urging us to hit the sack a little earlier with each dwindling night of summer vacation ― so what now? And, come to think of it, did they even know what they were doing? (Science says, maybe not.) We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to get some answers and help you rest easy as your summer winds down.

1. Slow And Steady Doesn’t Necessarily Win The Race

When it comes to our sleep schedules, Rachel Kazez, a therapist based in Chicago who specializes in intensive therapy for adolescents, reminds us that consistency matters above all. While some bodies do best with very gradual adjustments ― say, waking up 15 minutes earlier at a time ― Kazez recommends making a more dramatic change of two hours at once, and focusing more on the morning itself and less on the previous night. “Instead of worrying the night before how much sleep you or your kids will get, focus on a consistent wake-up time,” Kazez explains.

But wait, doesn’t jumping ahead a full two hours sound like a big no-no? “I think this has to be up to personal style, but I know that for a lot of teens and for myself and other younger adults, the gradual change just prolongs the discomfort,” Kazez says. “The quicker one can get to consistency, the better,” she says. “It’s like daylight saving time, or taking a flight from Chicago to L.A. ― we don’t worry much about it, we just do it. Because our thoughts about it are, This is how things are now, instead of, Oh no, I have to make a change, it’s not such a big deal.”

2. Joy In The Morning

How can you lock a new ― and much earlier ― wake-up time? Kazez suggests families go on a fun, memory-making trip the week before school starts; not only does it require an earlier wake-up time for everyone, but the thrill of the trip makes the change a little easier. Don’t have time to squeeze in another trip before school starts? Try offering the kiddos an extra half-hour of their favorite pastime ― but only before 8 a.m. This will help motivate them to get up earlier and make the most of those prime morning hours.

Regardless of whether it’s you or the kids who need a little help to start the day, a mix of water and sunlight could be the cure-all, says psychologist Michael Breus, diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “Upon waking up, you should immediately strive to get hydrated by drinking a glass of water,” Breus says. He also recommends getting a healthy dose of sunshine, preferably outside, for about 15 minutes. “This will stop the melatonin faucet, which is flowing, to help [you] wake up.”

3. Power Down To Turn In

Please tell us you know by now that those ghostly, glowing screens that take up so much of our time are bad for your sleep health. Studies show that the blue light from LED screens can slow down or disturb the production of melatonin, the hormone that tells our body when it’s time to turn in for the night. Kazez recommends powering down all screens about an hour before bedtime.

In order to avoid LED-driven sleeplessness, fitness and wellness coach Angela Hubbs recommends keeping soft, orange lights around your home. Himalayan Salt Lamps, for example, emit negative ions, which have been shown to do everything from boost serotonin and energy levels to alleviate depression.

4. End The Self-Fulfilling-Prophecy Cycle Of Insomnia

What about those of us who get a bad night’s sleep because we obsess over the fear of getting a bad night’s sleep? Whether it’s prompted by the first day back to work after a two-week vacation, a new school year, or a high-stakes business meeting the next day, anxiety about needing a good night’s sleep can sometimes hinder your ability to get it. Enter the self-fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to come true.

End the cycle of insomnia by triggering relaxation with an anxiety-melting bedtime routine, including things like a lavender-scented soak, decaffeinated tea and a read that makes you snooze (but not on a device!). “When we are stressed, [or] going through major changes or life transitions, the first place we see symptoms is in sleep disruption,” says psychotherapist Fran Walfish, author of The Self-Aware Parent. “Create a routine that winds you down in the evening and sets the mood for sleep,” she says.

5. We’re Not All Created Sleepqually

It’s important to remember, Hubbs says, that we all have different physical needs and require different amounts of sleep ― something families can easily lose sight of when they’re without the structure imposed by the school year. “Children require more because they are still growing. Even during the summer, their routine should stay relatively the same.”

Dr. Breus says teenage sleep schedules are often the most difficult because their biological clocks naturally push them to stay up late and sleep later. “The number one thing I ask parents to do is to educate their kids on the importance of sleep to school and athletic performance, why going to bed earlier is not a punishment, but rather a strategy for them to do better in school.” It’s a sleep strategy for adults, too. “Enjoy every bit of the summer, but to the best of your ability keep your routine relatively similar in order to make any major transition an easier one.”

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support— your Sleep Number® setting. And when you add SleepIQ® technology you’ll know what to adjust for your best possible sleep.

    Why #ImWithHer

    2016-08-08-1470627111-5620476-Attachment11.jpeg

When I was in third grade, I wanted to be the “first girl President” of America. I was inspired by then President Bill Clinton. While I didn’t understand the issues and the politics, I heard his powerful message as the boy from Hope. To me, he embodied the American dream. He allowed me to believe that if I wanted, I could do anything that I was determined to accomplish. His story inspired my third grade self to aim higher – not just by his words, but by the life he had lived. He left me with hope and promise. The President motivated me to aim to make the world a better place – and this is exactly what I hope the future President will do for the next generation.

When I think of leadership, I think of someone who can bring people together – not through fear – but through example, through perseverance, through service – someone who points to the light and not the darkness, someone who has a vision. After all, that is the job of our commander in chief – to motivate us, to inspire the world through example, and to set a new standard for a future generation of leaders – just like President Clinton did for me and President Obama has done for my younger brother and sister.

#ImWithHer because Secretary Clinton’s story inspires me. She has lived her life serving our country in a very public manner. We scrutinize her every move and detail because we can. We can scrutinize her tax returns, her public records, her evolving stances on political issues, her haircuts, her pantsuits, her daughter, and her husband. We probably have over a million data points on her – why? Because she has served in some of the highest positions – either through appointment of through the will of the people. In my eyes, she is bold – she is relentless. In my eyes, she cares.

#ImWithHer because there has always been a gap in our nation’s highest position. For the first time in history, there is a candidate who not only understands what it means to lead and serve America – but understands what it means to be a mother, a daughter, a wife, a grandmother, and above all else, what it means to be a woman. Her – our – perspective has been missing from our nation’s narrative since the founding of our union. The very fact that she is a woman already means that this will be a presidency unlike any other we have ever seen or experienced as a nation.

Fast-forward 20 years. I am looking for the candidate that can motivate our country – especially, our youth. Secretary Clinton’s story inspired me to want to become a better American and enter public service. As she shatters the glass ceiling for the highest office in our country, she will inspire the next generation to dream big and truly believe that the sky is the limit. That’s why #ImWithHer.

This Simple Gratitude App Was Inspired By A 22-Year-Old Who Died Of Cancer

Shalin Shah died of cancer at the age of 22, but before his death he made sure to send a message to the world to cherish life for the gift that it is.

Shah made headlines in the weeks leading up to his death in May 2015 for a powerful blog published on The Huffington Post, titled “Thank You, Cancer.” In it, he described moving through his fear of death to realize his true purpose in life ― to inspire others to live their lives fully, even as his own was rapidly coming to an end.

The 22-year-old’s profound and precocious wisdom motivated his family to launch a hashtag on Twitter and Instagram, start a foundation in his name and publish a book of Shah’s quotes.

Now with the help of software company Finoit Technologies, the Shah family has developed an app that aims to make gratitude a daily part of people’s lives. The app, available for download on Apple and Android devices, invites users to set a daily gratitude reminder “to take a moment and appreciate the beauty of life,” according to a release.

Think of it as a “gentle nudge,” the Shah family said, reminding users to slow down and give thanks.

“The app was developed to spread Shalin’s legacy,” his mother, Bharati Shah, told HuffPost. “Shalin’s wish was that if he could put a smile on someone’s face even for a minute it served his purpose in life.”

Shah was just 22 years old when he died from an aggressive form of soft tissue cancer in May 2015. A California native and recent college grad, Shah had just begun Peace Corps training in Peru when he became ill and was later diagnosed with  stage IV synovial sarcoma.

In the months that followed, Shah confronted his fear of death and developed a profound philosophy of life. In his blog, “Thank You, Cancer,” Shah wrote:

This is the purpose of my life I had been searching for all of my life — to inspire positive personal change in as many people as possible. In fact, that is the reason I’ve decided to write this article and go public with my story as well, I want to share my experience of realizing how beautiful the gift of life truly is in the hopes that it can inspire others who are going through tough times to appreciate the positive in life a little more. It is also the reason why I am, after all that I’ve been through in the past few months, thankful for terminal cancer.

The young man’s legacy lives on through the app, which features quotes from Shah’s writings and photographs of his travels abroad.

“We hope it will inspire many and spread positivity and good vibes all over the world,” the Shah family told HuffPost. “It’s a simple way to slow down and take a moment for yourself.”

Florida Gov. Rick Scott Tells Congress To ‘Show Up’ In Fight Against Zika

(Reuters) – Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott on Sunday accused the federal government of lagging in providing assistance to combat the spread of the Zika virus in a Miami-area neighborhood, the site of the first U.S. transmission of the virus.

Scott was speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about the neighborhood of Wynwood, where crews began aerial spraying on Thursday to kill virus-carrying mosquitoes. Zika can cause microcephaly, a rare but devastating birth defect.

The governor said state health authorities had identified 16 cases of Zika that were spread by local mosquitoes and criticized the federal government for failing to get more involved in battling the virus.

Scott said he asked U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Thomas Frieden earlier this week for 10,000 additional Zika preparedness kits.

“We still need the federal government to show up. The President and Congress have to work together. This is a national, international issue. It’s not just a Florida issue,” Scott said.

A representative for the CDC could not be immediately reached on Sunday.

President Barack Obama, a Democrat, earlier this week called on Congress to approve more funds to fight Zika’s spread in the United States, saying that money to fight the outbreak is rapidly running out.

Scott’s comments come a day after Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida stirred controversy by telling political news outlet Politico that pregnant women infected with Zika should not be able to get an abortion, even when there was evidence the baby might be born with severe microcephaly.

“I understand a lot of people disagree with my view – but I believe that all human life is worthy of protection of our laws,” Rubio, a former candidate for his party’s presidential nomination, told Politico. “But if I’m going to err, I’m going to err on the side of life.”

U.S. health regulators said on Friday that they had cleared the way for a trial of genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida that can reduce mosquito populations, potentially offering a new tool to fight the local spread of Zika and other viruses.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed more than 1,600 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

The Green Party Picks Its Presidential Ticket

HOUSTON ― The Green Party officially nominated Massachusetts physician and progressive activist Jill Stein as its presidential candidate on Saturday, also selecting human rights activist Ajamu Baraka as her running mate.

“We are what democracy looks like and we are what political revolution looks like,” Stein said accepting her party’s nomination. Stein also served as the party’s standard-bearer in 2012, when she received .9 percent of the national popular vote.

The radically progressive ticket faces a near-impossible climb electorally, as the Green Party only currently appears on ballots in 21 states and territories, though that number may grow as ballot registration deadlines are reached over the next month. However, the party has already been excluded from the ballot in Indiana, North Carolina and Oklahoma.

Green Party officials hope that historically high disapproval ratings of the two major parties’ candidates, buoyed by disillusioned supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) presidential campaign, will give the party its highest turnout yet.

However, party officials and activists readily admit they don’t expect to win in November. In a questionnaire submitted to the party by Stein, the candidate wrote that she hoped to “Multiply the Green Party vote totals several-fold over 2012” and “Establish the Green Party as the preeminent progressive opposition party to the bipartisan establishment in Washington.”

Recent polling suggests Stein is poised to fare better in 2016 than in her first run and she is averaging roughly 4 percent in polls. However, her numbers have trailed the other major third-party candidate, Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson, who has averaged around 8 percent. Perhaps more notable for Green activists, a recent survey from McClatchy finds Stein pulling more support from voters under 30 than GOP nominee Donald Trump, coming in third with 16 percent.

“I want to recognize the people coming out of the Bernie Sanders campaign who helped launched a revolutionary political movement,” Stein told the assembled delegates on Saturday morning during remarks by the party’s presidential candidates. “[T]here will be no stopping you and no stopping us until we have achieved that change that we have all put on the platform together.”

On the day that Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton, the floodgates opened on our campaign.
    Jill Stein

“On the day that Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton, the floodgates opened on our campaign,” Stein said in her acceptance speech.

“Now that they got Bernie Sanders out of the way, they’re going to focus on us!” Iowa delegate Wendy Barth contended.

Officials with the Stein campaign and Green Party spent far more of the convention appealing to Democrats disillusioned by Hillary Clinton’s campaign than Republican disillusioned by Donald Trump’s, a not very surprising development given the party’s liberal platform.

Convention speakers directly criticized Clinton far more often than Trump, attacking the Democratic nominee for her support of the 2003 invasion of Iraq and ties to Wall Street.

“We are hungry for a woman president,” said one delegate during the party’s roll call vote, “but not a war-hungry corporate criminal.”

Other speakers at the convention made more pointed appeals to wayward Sanders supporters. “The leader of your revolution has sold you out to a corporate shill warmonger,” one Green presidential candidate, Kent Philip Mesplay, told the crowd Saturday morning.

YahNe Ndgo, a progressive activist and former Sanders supporter, accused the Vermont senator of “sheepdogging for Hillary and the Democrats in 2016.”

“We cannot be beholden to Bernie Sanders,” Ndgo told the convention.

In addition to selecting the party’s presidential ticket, the Green delegates also codified the party’s platform, which includes planks on dramatically ramping up efforts to combat global warming, ending mass incarceration and reducing domestic and foreign surveillance. It also features platform items that fall well to the left of the Democratic Party, including calling for reparations for descendants of slaves and condemning Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.

The Green Party has not been without its share of controversy this election cycle. Stein has come under fire recently for comments that affirmed the science of vaccinations but echoed language used by anti-vaccine activists, as The Huffington Post’s Anna Almendrala noted earlier this month.

“Like any medication, [vaccines] also should be — what shall we say? — approved by a regulatory board that people can trust,” Stein told the Washington Post in July.

Looking ahead, party officials say one of Stein’s best hopes to gain traction will be to appear in the presidential debates this fall. A lawsuit brought by the Stein and Johnson campaigns against the Commission on Presidential Debates, the body that sets the number of debates and the rules governing them, was thrown out by a federal judge on Friday. Currently, the commission requires candidates to receive at least an average of 15 percent in five nationwide polls in order to participate.

    Upheaval

Some years ago, there was a period in my life when everything was going beautifully. I was busy and active, but never overly stressed. During those days, I felt at the height of my creative powers, like I was growing in every way. And here was the amazing thing: every resource I needed just seemed to come into my life, without my having to go chase it down.

You ever have one of those times, when everything just seems to be going your way? That’s what it was like. And I’m not talking about just for a day, or a week, but month after month, things just kept going like that, getting better and better.

I should have known that streak wouldn’t last forever. Somehow, I didn’t see the crisis coming.

    It came anyway.

One day, for no apparent reason, all hell broke loose.

Suddenly it seemed like everything was in turmoil. Everything I’d taken for granted, the stretches of peaceful concentration, the effortlessness of everyday life — gone. It wasn’t just that I was being shaken out of a sense of complacency. It was more like I was being shoved out of my life.

I’ve never been through an earthquake, nor experienced the fury of a volcano or the direct hit of a lightning strike — but I’ll bet they all feel something like what I was feeling now.

It’s hard to describe in detail, but it seemed like every aspect of my surroundings, an environment that had so recently felt altogether nourishing and supportive, had all at once turned against me.

I want things to go back to the way they were! I thought. But I knew things couldn’t go back to the way they were. They never do. They only go forward.

Acknowledging — albeit grudgingly and with a continuing sense of considerable resistance — the fact that I was being forced to leave behind the comfortable life I’d known, I plunged into the difficult and frightening business of making a transition to a new chapter, with no clear sense at all of what that new chapter might look like.

It was terrifying. I felt like I no longer even knew who I was, let alone where I was heading.

At one point things got so bad that I actually let out a physical wail of distress.

And in the next instant, there was a blinding light — and I heard the thundering of a nearby voice:

“Congratulations, Mrs. Mann — it’s a healthy baby boy!”

Transition: it never feels easy, does it? But then, you can’t just stay where you were.

And really, considering the possibilities of the road ahead: would you even want to?

Genetically Modified Mosquitoes Approved By FDA To Fight Zika In Florida

The United States has taken another step toward clearing the way for a trial of genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida as a way of reducing populations of mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday that a field trial testing Intrexon Corp’s genetically engineered mosquitoes would not have a significant impact on the environment. The announcement came as Florida officials ramp up aerial pesticide spraying of a neighborhood in Miami. Florida is the first state to report local transmission of the virus.

Florida health authorities have identified 16 Zika cases spread by local mosquitoes and expect there may be more.

Pregnant women are most at risk from Zika, a virus spread by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies.

The Zika outbreak was first detected last year in Brazil and has spread rapidly in the Americas.

Intrexon’s Oxitec unit has been working for years to kick off a trial of the mosquitoes in the Florida Keys to assess the effectiveness of its mosquitoes to reduce levels of mosquitoes that carry diseases, including Zika, dengue, Yellow Fever and chikungunya.

The FDA has been reviewing Oxitec’s application for use of its technology as an investigational new animal drug. Its environmental assessment helps clear the way for the company to begin a clinical trial in Key Haven, Florida that would assess whether the genetically modified mosquitoes will mate with local, wild mosquitoes and suppress their population over time.

Results of that trial would be used to support approval of the company’s technology, a process that could take more than a year.

Oxitec’s mosquitoes are genetically altered so their offspring die before they can reproduce. Trials in Brazil, Panama and the Cayman Islands have shown that the Oxitec mosquitoes can reduce local Aedes aegypti populations by more than 90 percent.

    ‘THEY ARE USING US’

To begin the trial, however, the company must first await the results of a vote in the Nov. 8 general election seeking community approval for the trial.

Oxitec Chief Executive Hadyn Parry said in a conference call that the vote is non-binding, and the decision about whether to proceed is up to the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, the local body responsible for mosquito control.

Community support in the vote is not guaranteed.

In Key Haven, a suburb of large, waterfront homes near Key West where the trial is slated to take place, yard signs have popped up declaring “no consent” to the release of genetically modified mosquitoes.

Kathryn Watkins, a Key Haven resident recruited by trial opponents, is seeking election to the board overseeing the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District.

“It just has everyone scared,” Watkins said, adding that local residents see themselves as unwilling test subjects. “The genetically modified male has to mate with a wild female, and the wild female has to bite us in order to lay eggs,” she said.

“They are using us in this trial without consent,” she added.

As his company awaits the vote, Parry said he intends to ask the FDA for an emergency-use authorization that would make the product available to help battle Zika in the United States. The FDA has approved several diagnostic products under this designation.

But it is not likely to be granted under current statutes. FDA spokeswoman Theresa Eisenman said there is no “fast-track” designation for new animal drugs, and emergency-use provisions in the applicable law do not apply to animal drugs.

The World Health Organization has declared Zika a global health emergency, and has suggested that alternative approaches to fighting mosquitoes that carry the virus might be an important way to suppress mosquito populations.

Zika spread rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean before local transmission began in the continental United States. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes thrive in warmer southern U.S. states.

MTBF, MTTR, And The System Of You

I’ve failed many times. I failed recently and it feels awful. How about you? When was the last time you failed?

When we’re very young we fail a lot. Look at any toddler as they learn to walk. It’s pretty well understood that it’s through failure and persistence that we learn to do things.

Fast forward a few years, and it becomes increasingly difficult for us to accept failure. We assume that we can’t learn and grow at the rate that we could when we were kids. But is that really true? Maybe we stop growing because we’re scared of failure.

The core of this essay came out of teaching Search Inside Yourself in France this summer where participants found some of the analogies below very useful.

    2016-08-05-1470428185-4030669-Untitled3.png

    Measuring Failure

There are several different metrics we can use when measuring system failures. I want to use two of them to contrast ways of thinking about failure. The first is Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and the second is Mean Time To Recovery (MTTR).

If you focus on increasing Mean Time Between Failures (or MTBF, the average time between failures), you tend towards building a highly controlled system that stays within safe bounds of operation. You harden your components, control your operating conditions, and are relentless in your pursuit of order.

When I worked at amazon in the early 2000s, both amazon and google were pioneering a slightly different way of thinking about the reliability of computer systems. They began to experiment with the idea of using very cheap components that were known to fail; so “failures” became routine occurrences rather than out-of-the-ordinary events. Then you bind them together with software that expects those failures, and works around them as quickly as possible. You start to focus, then, on the Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR) from a failure — or the time it takes for the system to come back to being operational after a given failure.

    The System of You

Think about what those two approaches mean for the System of You.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably old enough that you know that failure usually feels like poop. No one likes that feeling. Think of a time when you felt shame, when you let someone down, when you publicly made a mistake. It was probably uncomfortable and you may have resolved never to feel that again.

In other words, we start optimizing for a very long Mean Time Between Failures; possibly by doubling-down on our strengths, avoiding things that are unfamiliar, unknown, or uncomfortable,.

What would it look like to optimize for Mean Time To Recovery? To push the boundaries of the uncomfortable, to embrace failures, to fail fast and fail often (as the startup mantra goes), and to continue to get better at recovering quickly from those failures.

It may sound good in theory, but given how terrible failure feels, how do you actually do this?

    Be with what IS.

At the most basic level, we need to learn to be with whatever is.
What will happen hasn’t yet happened, so cannot actually harm us in this instant.
What was, by definition, has already manifested, and so cannot be changed.
Even what is happening in this instant is already in the process of unfolding, so cannot be changed.
But we do have a choice as to how we react to what is happening right now.

While it might be possible to accept all that intellectually, it still doesn’t change the fact that failure feels awful in the moment. How do we learn to experience the very physical unpleasantness that comes with difficult emotions (like failure)?

This is exactly what we practice when we sit.

After we first train our attention, we learn to bring our attention to physical sensations in all different parts of our body, and observe their characteristics objectively, without labeling them as pleasant or unpleasant. We practice being with unpleasant sensations without pushing them away but instead just really noticing them like a scientist might observe bacteria under a microscope.

Very soon we realize that we need to be skillful not just with the unpleasant, but with the pleasant sensations too.

How could that be important — isn’t it good to feel, well, good?

If we cannot experience pleasant sensations with the same objectivity that we cultivate in the presence of unpleasantness, we quickly go from enjoying them to becoming attached to them. And then the moment they disappear (which they must), we crave them, and we are uncomfortable until we can bring them back.

In a way this is related to Carol Dweck’s research on fixed vs. growth mindset, and the importance of praising effort vs. outcome. Praise feels good, and if the praise is for a positive outcome (“good job acing that test!”) then we tend to only work on things where we expect to get a positive outcome. If the praise is for effort (“you studied hard for that test!”), then we are more open to working on things where our efforts will be recognized, regardless of the outcome.

In a way what we’re talking about here is going one level deeper and weaning ourselves from the need to be praised or recognized — regardless of whether it’s for effort or outcome.

    Sensations and MTTR

Wait a sec. Our goal was to reduce Mean Time to Recovery. Let’s suppose you somehow master the art of “being with what is.” How and why does that help reduce MTTR?

There are two aspects to this.

I often use the stubbed-toe example when I teach: take a moment to think about, and briefly re-live, a time you stubbed your toe; and the pain you felt…

Did you later say to yourself: “let me kick the table again so I can really remember what that stubbed toe felt like?” I doubt it.

And yet we do that all the time with our emotions. Something happens that causes us grief, and we re-play that incident over and over again in our minds. Each time we re-play it, we feel the grief, and try to push away that unpleasant feeling. And as we try to push it away, we analyze, dissect, and re-play it yet again.

As we get better with objectively observing sensations, the first thing that happens is that it becomes easier to experience the unpleasantness of failure as a passing bodily sensation, just like a stubbed toe. You can notice its onset, experience it in all its unpleasant and gory detail without needing to push it away, and notice as it passes (as everything does). There’s no need to continue to relive it. We can see ourselves as a sky with dark clouds currently passing through us, rather than identifying with the darkness.

As we learn to experience our sensations objectively, in finer levels of detail, and without pushing away the unpleasant or grasping for the pleasant — the second thing that happens is that we develop an ability to also make better cognitive sense of them. For example:

How much of our grief is from some actual impending issue (“my rent is due and I’m broke”)?

How much of our grief is from current events not reflecting a mental picture we’ve created to describe who we are (e.g., traits such kind, conscientious, hard working; and roles like engineer, husband, father)?

And how much of the grief is from worrying about the effect on meticulous PR job we’ve done our whole life, creating mental pictures in other people’s minds (“what will so-and-so think of me when they hear about this?”).

Once we can tease apart these factors, the magnitude of the grief we experience is often reduced significantly, and it becomes even easier to recover rather than stew in worry, anger, shame, or other negative emotions.

    Why embrace failure?

Backing up a moment — isn’t it good that failure feels terrible? Isn’t that what helps drives us to succeed, and navigate away from mistakes?

I’m in no way suggesting a masochistic love of failure.

I love how we talk about self-management in the Search Inside Yourself class as

a shift from compulsion to choice

“Unpleasantness” is an amazing set of data points that we are getting about a situation. Normally we are reacting to the unpleasantness by keeping it at arm’s length, we are in effect compelled, trapped or victimized into a course of action by our desire to get rid of that unpleasantness.

I’m advocating learning to integrate these data points into a broader understanding of a situation and then proactively choosing the most skillful course of action.

But like any skill, this too is a skill that needs to be practiced.

    Back to the cushion

So as we practice being with the pleasant and unpleasant on the cushion, we get better at recovering from life’s setbacks.
As we get better at recovering from life’s setbacks, we stop over-indexing on safety and are more open to taking risks and exploring opportunities.
    When those pan out, great!
In case they don’t, we get more practice at failing (and recovering), and feel even more liberated from the fear of the unknown.

So while you may think of meditators as sedentary and stationary; I believe there’s a way in which sustained practice can support a life of great adventure and exploration!

    Footnote

In a way I feel vulnerable writing this. You may have read memoirs where the authors celebrate and glorify their failures, while writing from a vantage point of success and subsequent accolades. Part of me is thinking: “What if that high point never comes for me? What if this is as good as it gets?”

However, among the things I’m grateful to have experienced and observed first-hand these past few years is that nobody is spared from the pains of being human. Not the the super-wealthy, not the successful entrepreneurs and executives, not movie stars, not the suits, the hardhats, and no — not even the monks.

Which is why I’m pretty sure that you too have felt this uncertainty at some point in your life.

And so I wanted to share this post from “the trenches.” From a place of peacefully walking through a plateau of not knowing what comes next.

Integrative Scientist Pizzorno: “Toxicity is the Primary Driver of Disease”

Regular medicine is awakening to the dumbfounding reality that clinical care accounts for just 10%-20% of the factors contributing to health. But if research recently presented by a leader in the revitalization of the naturopathic medical profession – and of the movements for functional and integrative medicine – is correct, even the most aggressive adopters of the new thinking are still missing the boat.

The new thinking argues that if we want to create health, we need to address things like poverty, education, genetics and healthy behaviors. The figure describes these.

    2016-08-05-1470421229-8733640-socialdeterminants_health250.PNG

Yet according to best-selling author and researcher Joseph Pizzorno, ND, even these new adopters are grossly understating the most significant factor. In a recent presentation at Snowbird, Utah at the annual conference of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Pizzorno presented compelling evidence that – if his calculations hold up – “toxicity is the primary driver of disease.”

Pizzorno, the co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine – the first major textbook detailing the evidence behind natural therapeutics – is the leading figure in the re-emergence of the naturopathic medical profession over the past 40 years. The founding president of what is now Bastyr University is presently the editor of the peer-reviewed and PubMed-indexed scientific publication, Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal.

Since leaving the Bastyr presidency, Pizzorno led a multi-year employee health project with a significant Canadian employer. Through it, he opened his eyes further to what he now believes is the most important yet grossly under-respected target for remedial action if health is our goal.

Pizzorno and colleagues first shared well-known data showing that our present chronic disease epidemics – including obesity, diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and kidney disease – are temporally associated with a parallel rise in environmental pollutants. The worst are what are called POPS – “persistent organic pollutants.” These are chemical compounds that are defined as “resistant to environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes.” They have long half-lives and hang around in our soils and tissues.

    2016-08-05-1470422146-8430136-Pizzorno_photo2016.jpg

The parallel arcs of increase – see the graph below — in each from 1960s to the present are startling. In his presentation, Pizzorno showed that, in contradistinction, the sugar-and-diabetes relationship is not nearly as compelling.

In his presentation, Pizzorno then described a mathematical model he and his team built for predicting the “attributable fraction” of a disease that can be linked to specific chemical exposures. The team worked out data for high profile POPS: DDT, glyphosates, arsenic, lead, vinyl chloride and a dozen more.

The conclusions are ugly. Reported Pizzorno: “Greater than 50% of ADHD is due to just 3 toxins. Over 50% of diabetes is due to phthalates, arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.” His team found direct correlations between specific POPs and IQ decreases in children. Individual toxins were found to have profound impacts on numerous serious diseases. “Nearly 45% of Alzheimer’s,” reported Pizzorno, “is linked to DDT alone.” The calculations put the attributable fraction of arsenic to prostate cancer at 31.5%. Over 40% of gout in women is arsenic related. PCBs had a high association with heart attacks. And on and on.

The POPS are everywhere. Pizzorno presented a slide that denoted the following proportional sources: food (70%), water (10%), house and yard chemicals (10%), air (5%) and health and beauty aids (5%).

I asked Pizzorno after the talk if the formula has been vetted. He responded that he’d had it reviewed by multiple scientists and the method is under discussion. He added that “the results are so surprising that all possible critiques need to be thoroughly considered.” That process continues.

The week after the presentation, I opened my email to a document from the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences entitled “The Interplay Between Environmental Chemical Exposures and Obesity: Proceedings of a Workshop.” The workshop was a world removed from the gathering of naturopathic physicians to whom Pizzorno presented his findings. Yet they had similar conclusions.

    2016-08-05-1470422462-3433366-Toxinschronicchartto2000.gif

Instead of naturopathic doctors whose whole system world views dispose them toward anticipating health problems from toxins, the report sponsors included Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell and Colgate Palmolive. Yet here, too, according to the introduction to the report, “the speakers at the workshop discussed evidence from both studies with animal models and human epidemiological studies that exposure to environmental chemicals is linked both to weight gain and to glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and other aspects of the metabolic syndrome.”

Their content was neither as wide-ranging or causality-specific as that presented by Pizzorno. Yet the agreement that addressing diet and lifestyle alone are not going to get to the bottom of the huge and costly obesity epidemic is strong. And it should not surprise that the naturopathic and integrative medicine communities remain a few steps ahead of regular medicine in respecting the damage of these agents in human health.

The implications of Pizzorno’s research and analysis are profound. The piece of the pie chart above on determinants of health would need to vastly expand from the 10% share attributed to the “physical environment” to reflect the corrosive, disruptive forces of toxins on our tissues and life processes.

Presidential candidates vie over whether we need $ 1-trillion or $ 500-billion or $ 250-billion to begin to get our nation’s infrastructure in order. But what is the budget needed for economic conversion from POPS-riddled industry, agriculture, energy production, food processing, housing and consumer goods to methods in each of these arenas that co-habit with human health? Isn’t this an infrastructure we need to address?

Pizzorno’s data suggest that unless we wake to more sustainable living, we should prepare ourselves for a paradoxical future. Our highways and bridges and schools and water systems seem to have bipartisan support for renovation. Yet these fresh environs will be inhabited by human beings crippled by diseases of toxicity.

Thank You, Mr. Trump: Why The Donald Did A Favor For CPT Khan

Life is filled with unintended consequences–or as we would say in the Army, second and third order effects. Like anyone, I see many things in my Facebook feed that make me cringe, some that make me laugh, and more than a few during this political season that make me shake my head. Nothing confounded me more than Donald Trump and Mr. and Mrs. Khan.

Having been involved in more than a few political events, I can imagine what went through the minds of DNC Convention organizers when they scheduled the Khans. During the 2008 Obama Campaign, we routinely invited Gold Star Families to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or other types of activities. For us, they served as a symbol of the people we needed to take care of — the people to whom we owed everything.

For them, I think these events were a way of honoring their sacrifice and more importantly, remembering their fallen. So I would imagine that the DNC organizers had similar thoughts. An immigrant family loved America so much their son volunteered to serve and make the ultimate sacrifice. What could speak our better angels more truly? What could be more American?

I did not know CPT Khan, but I can imagine that the conversations he had with his family we the same I had with mine. That the assurances he gave his friends, family, and parents we similar to the words I had said. But deep down he knew, I knew, we all know, that this could be it.

We all do different things to come to terms with the idea that we are facing possible death; some of us ignore it, others avoid it, and a lucky few come to peace with it. The truly daunting question that we all ask ourselves is, “Where will I be and how will I act when that moment of truth comes?”

CPT Khan answered that question. He went towards the danger. He put himself above his soldiers.

Sadly, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made stories like CPT Khan’s all too familiar, but I can thank Mr. Trump for making certain that CPT Khan has been noticed by all. As stated in Senator John McCain’s statement referring to Mr. and Mrs. Khan: “your son was the best of America, and the memory of his sacrifice will make us a better nation – and he will never be forgotten.”

This is probably not the context in which we’d prefer to remember an American hero but no matter the source, every reminder of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make is essential to the character of our nation and make us a better people.
